How To Market Your Biz When the World is On Fire

A mistake I’ve watched too many biz owners make online is ignoring what’s happening right now in the news.

I get it, who wants to talk “politics”?

But the truth is; this isn’t about politics.

This is about human & civil rights.

And for many of us, we don’t have the privilege of being silent because we are personally affected by the current administration’s policies.

“But Lexie, I don’t want to lose customers if I say something that offends people…”

Well guess what sis? Your silence is still turning people off; it comes off as privileged and tone deaf and even insensitive. Because you’re not addressing people’s very real fears and offering support or comfort through these trying times. And with more and more people purchasing from people based on their values, you are gonna have to let people know where you stand to keep your business afloat.

So let’s talk about how to still share about your business when the world is falling apart. (Cause girl; this is only the beginning. According to the Astrology - things are about to get a LOT worse before they get better).

Acknowledge Reality

People are more inclined to take you seriously when you validate their lived experiences.

People are scared right now & if you’re not comforting their fears - you’re contributing to the problem.

Ignoring it won’t make it easier for people to buy from you.

Lean Into Your Mission

You started your business more than likely cause you wanted to call the shots & make a difference in your community. Ignoring the problems your community is facing comes off as tone deaf.

Offer content that brings awareness to issues in your community, promote minority owned businesses, and offer practical tools to navigate through these tough times.

Be Flexible With Your Strategy

Just sticking to your content plan will get you in trouble. For example, talking about your launch when the fires were happening L.A. can come off as insensitive.

Be willing to delay your launch and refocus your content to address the current issues. Can you share places to donate? Can you amplify the voices of accounts that are providing direct relief to the particular crisis? Be flexible.

Show That You Care

Lastly, when you do these things - people are MORE LIKELY to continue to support you AND be thrilled to work with you because they know their money is now supporting causes that MATTER to them.

Now more than ever, people are using their money to buy from companies that are aligned with their VALUES.

As a small business - YOU are part of that.

If You Want to Stay Relevant & Financially Successful…

You will NEED to address what’s happening & let your audience KNOW that you CARE about them. Staying “out of politics” now is basically saying to your audience, “I don’t care enough about human rights...”

or worse “since it’s not affecting me, I don’t care to say anything.”

If you don’t speak up, you WILL get left behind.
